It was inevitable. It almost always is. Luis Gonzalez was not going to walk away from the game of baseball at 39 years old. The Arizona Diamondbacks are in a transition period and looking to the future with young prospects, not 16-year veterans.
The Diamondbacks organization had known for most of this season that they were not going to bring back the most popular player in their history. The old veteran had held out hope that a good second half could change their minds. It never could.
