Because of games like Monday night's, right-hander Claudio Vargas' name likely will be in the next group, among those who could be replaced by outsiders or forced to battle for a job in spring training.
Vargas followed one of his best outings of the year with another of his frustrating ones, allowing five hits and six walks to the Washington Nationals, who once again put together late-inning rallies in beating the Diamondbacks 7-6 before 29,610 at Chase Field.
