One Gonzalez will replace the other in the Diamondbacks starting rotation.
The struggling Enrique Gonzalez, who hasn't won a game since July 17, will work out of the bullpen, opening a rotation spot for Edgar Gonzalez to get as many as three starts before the end of the season.
"We don't want a young kid to mentally go through this any longer," manager Bob Melvin said of Enrique Gonzalez's struggles. "We think he's going to be a fixture here. We saw early on that he has great stuff. He just got into a mode where we felt like we just needed to give him a little bit of a break from the rotation."
