The Diamondbacks learned Monday they will be without outfielder Jeff DaVanon for the rest of the season when a second opinion revealed he will require surgery on his slowly healing ankle.
General Manager Josh Byrnes said DaVanon has a split tendon in his left ankle, which explains why the injury, which originally was diagnosed as a sprain that would need only a few days to heal, has lingered.
DaVanon, who received a second opinion Monday in Los Angeles, had excelled as the club's fourth outfielder, hitting .290 with a .371 on-base percentage.
