SAN DIEGO - They probably had to leave the sprinklers on overnight near the pitcher's mound at Petco Park after the number of visits made there during the ninth inning Saturday by various members of the Diamondbacks.
If it wasn't manager Bob Melvin, it was pitching coach Bryan Price, catcher Chris Snyder or second baseman Orlando Hudson - most of them all at once - who tried to settle the nerves and the control of closer Jorge Julio and then rookie Tony Peņa.
Julio helped wear out the infield grass, too, upon walking the bases loaded and then getting removed from the game. But Peņa was able to finish what Julio started, and the Diamondbacks escaped with a 5-3 victory over the San Diego Padres.
