Default Barnstormers Add Six-Year Major League Veteran to Bullpen

Atlantic League

LANCASTER, Pa.-The Lancaster Barnstormers have added additional Major League experience to their bullpen. Six-year Major League veteran Jose Cabrera signed a 2008 contract, Barnstormers vice president of baseball operations Keith Lupton announced today.

Cabrera owns a career 19-17 record and a 4.95 ERA in nearly 200 Major League appearances with the Houston Astros, Atlanta Braves and Milwaukee Brewers. His best season in the big leagues came in 2001 when, as a set-up man with the National League East champion Braves, he went 7-4 with a 2.88 ERA in 55 appearances. He also pitched in the 1999 National League Divisional Series for the Astros.

"We saw Jose at the Phillies tryout in Clearwater, and we felt he was the best pitcher in the camp that day," Lupton said.

Cabrera, 36, has a career 3.21 ERA in 10 minor league seasons, five of which were at the triple-A level. Originally signed by the Cleveland Indians, Cabrera was traded to Houston in 1997 and claimed off waivers by the Braves in 2001.

Cabrera's signing brings the total number of players under contract with the 2008 Barnstormers to 17. The club will head to Lakeland, Florida for spring training on April 14.

The Barnstormers will open 2008 season at Clipper Magazine Stadium on Friday, April 25, 2008 against the Bridgeport Bluefish. The only way to guarantee seats for Opening Weekend is by becoming a Barnstormers season ticket holder. For more information on the Barnstormers numerous flexible ticket plans, call (717) 509-HITS or visit Lancaster Barnstormers - Lancaster, PA Baseball.

Tickets to Opening Night will go on sale during the Barnstormers annual FanFest on Saturday, April 5. Single-game tickets to all other regular season games will go on sale during a special internet pre-sale on Monday, March 31.
