Matsui Interested In The Giants, Yanks May Let Him Go
Quote:
Hideki Matsui is reported to be of interest to the San Francisco Giants, and the Yankees aren't shooting it down.
"We're looking at a lot of things," senior vice president Hank Steinbrenner said last night. "We're trying out a lot of things.
"I don't want to get into potential deals that we're going to make." The San Jose Mercury News, citing a Giants executive, said talks are "preliminary but substantive enough that the two clubs planned to speak again in the coming days." The Mercury News said the Yankees have interest in lefty reliever Johnathan Sanchez. Matsui's agent, Arn Tellem, said he had not heard from the Yankees regarding a possible trade of Matsui, who has a no-trade clause.
The Yankees have a glut of outfielders, especially if they want Jason Giambi to be a full-time designated hitter.
A Giants official (who asked not to be named because he was not in Nashville this week) said that Matsui's age and health issues did not seem to make him a fit for a team trying to get younger.
Tellem had no comment on Matsui's willingness to approve a deal.
