Riggleman takes job with Mariners

Cardinals minor league field coordinator Jim Riggleman, considered the leading in-house candidate to succeed Tony La Russa if La Russa declined to return to the organization, has accepted a bench coaching position with the Seattle Mariners.
The Mariners will announce Riggleman’s hiring later today.
Riggleman, a former manager of the San Diego Padres and Chicago Cubs and Whitey Herzog’s one-time first base coach, cited a desire to again manage in the majors as heavily influencing his decision.
"I felt after being out of the big leagues for a few years, I better not pass on this opportunity," said Riggleman, who declined similar offers following the 2006 season. "You sometimes feel if you’re out of sight, you’re out of mind. The visibility aspect of this played an important role for me."
