Baker throws One-Hitter
Quote:
MINNEAPOLIS -- Twins starter Scott Baker took a perfect game into the ninth inning in the nightcap of the Twins' doubleheader against the Royals at the Metrodome on Friday night, leading Minnesota to a 5-0 victory.
Baker walked John Buck in the ninth and allowed a single to pinch-hitter Mike Sweeney with one out to end his bid at a no-hitter.
The Twins notched the first hit of the game in the third inning when Mike Redmond led off with a single. Nick Punto broke out of an 0-for-12 slump by smacking a single, and both runners scored on Jason Bartlett's single.
The Twins added to their lead in the fifth. Royals starter Gil Meche gave up a walk to Bartlett, who advanced to third on Torii Hunter's single. Justin Morneau drove in Bartlett with a sacrifice fly for his 96th RBI of the season.
Minnesota scored again in the eighth, when Redmond singled home a run. Rondell White added a sacrifice fly RBI
But Baker didn't need any insurance runs. The 25-year-old struck out nine in the 15th one-hitter in Twins history.
