Alex Rodriguez was held hitless in five at-bats, but the Yankees' offense had his back against the White Sox. The Bombers clubbed eight homers, tying a team record set in 1939. Hideki Matsui clubbed two homers, giving him 13 in July. Mike Mussina netted the win.

The White Sox had a night to forget in the opener at Yankee Stadium, as Jose Contreras and the Sox bullpen allowed eight homers. Juan Uribe clubbed a three-run homer, but Chicago was held to eight hits. Ozzie Guillen and Paul Konerko were both ejected for arguing balls and strikes.
