Reds Acquire Jorge Cantu from TB
Quote:
CINCINNATI -- The Reds acquired infielder Jorge Cantu and outfielder Shaun Cumberland and cash from the Devil Rays in exchange for right-handed pitcher Calvin Medlock and left-handed pitcher Brian Shackelford and future considerations, Reds general manager Wayne Krivsky announced Saturday.
The Reds' press release of the transaction reported that Cantu, 25, will have a spot on the Reds' 40-man roster, but will be optioned to Triple-A Louisville. He will join Louisville when the Bats meet Tampa Bay's Triple-A Durham affiliate on Saturday in Louisville.
Cantu set a Tampa Bay record in 2005 with 117 RBIs and was named the Devil Rays' Most Valuable Player by the local chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association of America. That season, Cantu led the Major Leagues by driving in 21.1 percent of the baserunners he inherited, and his 2005 RBI total was the most by a player prior to the age of 24 since 23-year-old Albert Pujols drove in 124 runs in 2003.
