The question seemed inevitable last weekend when they sent former closer Ambiorix Burgos out for a spot start Saturday against Detroit after using Greinke for three innings of relief in Friday’s victory.

“We talk about all kinds of things when you’re sitting around and drinking coffee,” general manager Dayton Moore said. “But you’d rather have a starting pitcher.

“We’re open to anything, but it doesn’t matter about a closer if you don’t have the starting pitching to get to him.”

The Royals will actively search this winter for help in both their rotation and bullpen. Where Greinke fits could depend on the results of that scavenging.
