Default Tigers edge Pirates, land two All-Stars

One of their home runs floated, but the Tigers' hopes nearly sank Sunday.

Their hopes of getting out of here with another victory, that is.

On All-Star selection day, one on which they had two players -- Pudge Rodriguez and Kenny Rogers -- voted onto the American League team, the Tigers ushered in the second half of the season with a strange game, indeed.

They beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 9-8, so it wasn't bottom-line strange. With their 56-26 record, it's never bottom-line strange anymore when the Tigers win. After all, they trail only the 1911 Tigers for the best 82-game record in franchise history.

It's just how they did it this time.
