Pitching Matchups:
Game 1:
LHP Dumatrait (1-1, 3.86) vs. RHP Lohse (3-2, 4.87)

Scouting Report:
Pirates: Dumatrait picked up his first win of the season his last time out, dominating the Giants with 5 2/3 scoreless innings. He allowed just five hits and struck out five in the outing. Dumatrait, who has made just two starts since being moved from the bullpen to the rotation, continues to show more confidence in his changeup and is using that as a complement to his fastball and slider. The key for the lefty will continue to be making sure his pitches are down.

Cardinals: Lohse struggled Thursday, yielding seven runs on eight hits and five walks in four innings against the Rockies. Four of the runs came with two outs in the first inning after a hard grounder to third deflected off Brendan Ryan's glove, opening the door for four hits and two walks. Lohse couldn't get strike calls on his inside pitches, and in an effort to counteract the Coors Field factor of pitching at altitude, he abandoned his curve and tried too hard to pitch low in the zone, frequently ending up in the dirt. Ultimately, he had to come back over the plate, and the Rockies were able to sit on his pitches and hand him a lopsided loss.

Game 2:
LHP Maholm (2-3, 4.79) vs. RHP Wellemeyer (3-1, 3.56)

Scouting Report:
Pirates: If Maholm hadn't tried to make an unwise defensive play in his last start, he may well have finished six innings of work without giving up a run. But instead, his attempt to try and snag a grounder led to four Giants runs in and a no-decision for Maholm. The lefty ran up a high pitch count early, but retired the last seven hitters he faced and did well in keeping the ball down. Maholm is 1-2 with a 2.28 ERA in three starts against St. Louis.

Cardinals: Wellermeyer deserved better after allowing only a pair of unearned runs in six solid innings Friday in Milwaukee, but Jason Isringhausen blew his fifth save with two outs in the ninth, and Milwaukee rallied for a victory. Wellermeyer also had a hand in the offensive part of the game, driving in a run with a single. He was one of three runners on base with nobody out, however, and the Cardinals were unable to score more than two runs in a potentially explosive frame.

Game 3:
RHP Snell (2-2, 4.53) vs. RHP Piņeiro (2-2, 4.05)

Scouting Report:
Pirates: After allowing four runs in three consecutive outings, Snell allowed just one in a season-high seven innings his last time out. The right-hander has been struggling with his aggressiveness all season, but appeared to take a step forward in that department despite giving up a career-high six walks in the game. Snell needs to continue using both sides of the plate more effectively. The righty is 3-3 with a 3.71 ERA in nine appearances (eight starts) against St. Louis.

Cardinals: Pineiro's sinker was on fire Saturday in Milwaukee, and he left the game with a lead before earning a no-decision in the Cardinals' 5-3 win over the Brewers. Pineiro only allowed two hits -- both off the bat of Ryan Braun -- through six innings before he loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, a circumstance Pineiro said could have been related to fatigue. Though two of those runners ultimately scored, it was a great bounceback from the previous start, when he lasted only three frames.
