Ivan Rodriguez was 3-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs as Detroit held off New York, 6-5, in the opener of a three-game set at Comerica Park. Placido Polanco and Magglio Ordonez each finished 2- for-4 with an RBI for the Tigers, who won for just the second time in eight games but beat New York for the fourth consecutive time this season. Kenny Rogers (3-3) allowed just two runs on nine hits in six-plus innings to earn the win. Jason Giambi was 2-for-4 with a home run for the Yankees, who have dropped three of four games. Chad Moeller, Robinson Cano, Derek Jeter and Bobby Abreu added an RBI apiece for New York, while Hideki Matsui finished 0-for-4, snapping a career-best 17-game hitting streak. Kei Igawa (0-1), who was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre before the game, made his season debut and was rocked for six runs on 11 hits in just three-plus innings of work.

Ben Francisco had a pinch-hit, two-run double, part of a six-run Cleveland seventh inning, to lead the Indians past the Toronto Blue Jays, 6-1, in the opener of a four-game set from Progressive Field. Casey Blake went 2-for-4 with a two-run double and also scored a run for the Indians, who won for the third time in four tries. Jhonny Peralta had the other RBI for Cleveland. C.C. Sabathia (2-5) got the win after he gave up just one run on six hits in seven innings on the hill. Scott Rolen had a pair of singles for Toronto, which lost for the third time in its last four games. Marco Scutaro had the only RBI in defeat. Roy Halladay (3-5) absorbed the loss after he was touched for four runs on six hits. He did strike out nine batters and only walked three.

Evan Longoria hit the game-winning homer in the bottom of the ninth and James Shields pitched a one-hit shutout as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Angels, 2-0, in the opener of a three-game series. Shields (4-2) was dominant throughout, retiring 25-of-27 batters with the exceptions being a Brandon Wood single in the third and a ball that hit Erick Aybar in the fourth. In addition to allowing only two baserunners, Shields, who retired the final 17 batters he faced, struck out eight. Carlos Pena had two singles and B.J. Upton reached twice with a walk in the opening inning and a single in the ninth for the Rays. Los Angeles starter Jon Garland went toe-to-toe with Shields through eight scoreless innings, allowing only four hits and three walks while striking out two. Justin Speier (0-2) came on in the ninth for LA and surrendered Longoria's blast into the seats in left-center.

Aubrey Huff went 2-for-5 with a three-run home run, as the Baltimore Orioles took the second installment of a four-game set, 7-4, from the Kansas City Royals. Melvin Mora hit a two-run homer for the Orioles, who have won two in a row on the heels of a five-game skid. Kevin Millar was responsible for the other Baltimore RBI. Steve Trachsel (2-4) took the win after he went 5 1/3 innings and only gave up two runs on five hits. George Sherrill earned his 12th save of the year after he surrendered one hit and one walk in the ninth. Alex Gordon hit a two-run homer and finished with three RBI for the Royals, who have lost two in a row and four of five. John Buck went 2-for-4 with an RBI in defeat. KC Starter Gil Meche (2-5) absorbed the loss after he was touched for five runs on six hits in five frames.

Mike Lamb singled home the winning run in the ninth, as the Minnesota Twins rallied to down the Boston Red Sox, 7-6, in the opener of a four-game set from the Metrodome. Jonathan Papelbon entered the game for Boston in the ninth and Delmon Young greeted the Red Sox closer with a single to center field. Matt Tolbert bunted him over to second and, after Adam Everett popped out in foul territory for out number two, Young stole third. Carlos Gomez worked a walk and swiped second to put the winning run in scoring position. Lamb was buried in the count, but hit a soft fly ball off the end of the bat that fell in and won the game for Minnesota. Boof Bonser gave up six runs on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts over four-plus innings, while the bullpen tossed five scoreless innings of relief. The comeback made a winner out of Jesse Crain (1-1). Second baseman Brendan Harris was 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI before exiting in the sixth inning due to a tight right hamstring. Tolbert moved over from third to take Harris' spot in the field, and Lamb took over at the hot corner. Everett doubled twice and scored a run for the Twins, who have won seven of their last nine contests. Jon Lester gave up five runs -- three earned -- on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings, while Papelbon (2-2) blew his second save in as many chances. Mike Lowell went 2- for-5 with a run scored and two RBI for Boston, which has dropped two of three. Kevin Youkilis, Jason Varitek and Julio Lugo each had an RBI in defeat.

Brandon Boggs went 3-for-4 with a home run and three runs batted in, and the Rangers pitching staff recorded their third consecutive shutout with a 4-0 victory over the Oakland Athletics in the opener of a three-game series at Rangers Ballpark. The Rangers have not allowed a run in 31 straight innings, the second longest streak in franchise history. Scott Feldman (1-1), making just his third career start, was once again a pleasant surprise, tossing six innings and allowing just two hits and four walks for the upstart Rangers. Jamey Wright, Joaquin Benoit and C.J. Wilson finalized the shutout with an inning of scoreless relief each. Josh Hamilton was 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI as Texas has won four in a row and eight of its last 10. Greg Smith (2-2), who had allowed two runs or less in each of his previous three starts, was touched for four runs on six hits and two walks in six innings for the A's, who snapped a four-game win streak. Oakland failed to record an extra-base hit, as Jack Cust tallied two of club's four singles.

Jose Contreras hurled seven innings of one- run ball and Jim Thome slugged a home run, leading the Chicago White Sox to a 4-2 victory over the struggling Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field. Contreras (3-3) held the Mariners to six hits, issuing two walks and striking out four. Thome also walked and scored twice, and Paul Konerko had two hits and two runs batted in for Chicago. The White Sox have won three of their last four after losing six straight. Carlos Silva (3-2) gave up all four of Chicago's runs on eight hits through seven frames, with two walks and a strikeout. Ichiro Suzuki had a hit, stolen base and a run scored while Wladimir Balentien added his third home run of the season for Seattle, losers of its last four and 9- of-10 overall.
