Mark Ellis stroked a two-out game-winning home run in the tenth inning to give the Oakland Athletics a dramatic 6-5 win over the Baltimore Orioles. Ellis also had a single, walk, and stolen base, while Kurt Suzuki had two hits and two runs batted in, including his first homer of the year for the A's, who completed the three-game sweep and have won four in a row overall. Nick Markakis had three hits and Brian Roberts had two RBI in a losing effort for Baltimore, which extended its season-high losing streak to five. Lance Cormier (0-1) came on in relief of George Sherrill in the bottom half of the tenth and a hung a two-out slider to Ellis, who drove the ball down the left field line and off the foul pole to end the contest. Cliff Lee was brilliant through seven innings to keep his 2008 road earned run average at 0.00 for the Indians, as Cleveland edged the New York Yankees, 3-0, in the second installment of a three-game series from Yankee Stadium. Lee (6-0) allowed just six hits and fanned seven batters for the Indians, who took the first two games of this series. Rafael Betancourt earned his fourth save of the year after he pitched a perfect ninth inning. Jhonny Peralta and Ben Francisco both recorded a pair of base hits in the win, while David Dellucci added an RBI. Though Cleveland tallied seven hits, none went for extra bases. Chien-Ming Wang (6-1) took the loss despite a solid effort. The Yankees' ace yielded three runs on five hits in seven frames on the hill. Bobby Abreu went 2-for-4 with a double and was the only Yankee with a multi- hit game. Shelley Duncan also clubbed a double in defeat, and Hideki Matsui extended his hit streak to 16 games with a bloop single in the second inning.

Shaun Marcum took a one-hitter into the ninth inning, and Scott Rolen sparked a late rally with a two-run homer, as Toronto downed Tampa Bay, 6-2, in the middle contest of a three-game set. Marcum (4-2) was one out from completing the one-hit shutout, but ended up surrendering two runs on four total hits in 8 2/3 frames, with nine strikeouts. Rolen also doubled, while Marco Scutaro finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and Rod Barajas added a pair of hits for Toronto, which has won six of seven. Matt Garza (1-1) was solid in 6 2/3 innings for the Rays, as he gave up just one run on six hits, but took the loss. Scott Dohmann and Trever Miller gave up two runs apiece, while working just one-third of an inning. B.J. Upton provided the Rays' offense with a two-run double, but Tampa Bay lost its fourth out of five.

Placido Polanco's run-scoring single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth pushed Detroit past Boston, 10-9, in the third installment of a four-game set from Comerica Park. Polanco, who finished 5- for-6 with three RBI and two runs scored in the contest, looped a broken-bat base hit beyond Red Sox shortstop Julio Lugo in short left field to plate Edgar Renteria with the winning run. Detroit tied the game when the previous batter, Curtis Granderson, grounded out to second to score Ryan Raburn. Raburn was pinch-running for Matt Joyce, who began the frame with a single. Ivan Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with two runs knocked in for the Tigers, who snapped a five-game slide by pounding out 18 hits. Gary Sheffield and Magglio Ordonez each had three hits, a run scored and one driven in. Tigers reliever Todd Jones (1-0) hurled a scoreless inning of relief to pick up his first win of the season for starter Armando Galarraga, who allowed seven hits and five runs, while tying a career-high with six strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings. Kevin Youkilis homered twice and drove in three while Mike Lowell collected three hits including a home run with three RBI for the Red Sox, whose five- game win streak came to an end. Jonathan Papelbon (2-1) took the loss and was saddled with a blown save after allowing a pair of runs in the ninth. Sox starter Clay Buchholz was charged with 10 hits and five runs over four innings.

Carlos Gomez completed a cycle, and Livan Hernandez took a shutout into the ninth inning, as the Minnesota Twins took a 13-1 win over the Chicago White Sox in a delayed game. After foul weather set back the start time by several hours, Gomez notched Minnesota's first cycle since Kirby Puckett's on August 1, 1986, and the first of his career. Meanwhile, Hernandez (5-1) threw his 44th career complete game, giving up one run on nine hits Twins, who lost the opener of this three-game set but have won six of seven. Nick Punto finished 2-for-5 with five RBI, while Mike Redmond went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in for Minnesota. Punto, Redmond, and Michael Cuddyer each doubled. In Tuesday's series opener, Chicago's Gavin Floyd took a no-hitter into the ninth inning, but the tables were turned Wednesday. White Sox starter Mark Buehrle (1-4) was roughed up for seven runs on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings.

David DeJesus and Alex Gordon homered and Zack Greinke tossed seven solid innings, as the Kansas City Royals avoided a sweep with a 9-4 win over the LA Angels of Anaheim at Kauffman Stadium. Greinke (4-1) gave up three runs on five hits and struck out eight for the Royals, who have won three of their last five contests. Mark Grudzielanek and Jose Guillen each had three hits and scored twice. DeJesus belted a three-run homer, while Gordon hit a two-run shot. John Buck went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Jered Weaver (2-5) was roughed up for eight runs on 10 hits in 3 1/3 innings for the Angels, who saw their season-high four-game winning streak come to an abrupt end. Mike Napoli was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while Garret Anderson homered and tripled.

Vicente Padilla was virtually untouchable through seven innings, as the Texas Rangers edged the Seattle Mariners, 2-0, in a pitcher's duel from Safeco Field. Padilla (5-2) gave up just two hits, two walks and struck out eight batters for the Rangers, who have won six of their last eight contests. Padilla has given up one earned run or less in each of his last three starts. C.J. Wilson earned his eighth save of the year as he pitched the ninth and gave up just a walk. Milton Bradley went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and also scored twice. Brandon Boggs hit an RBI triple and Ian Kinsler ended with two hits. Ichiro Suzuki and Yuniesky Betancourt had the only hits for Seattle, which has lost 7-of-8, 11-of-16 and scored just one run in its last 23 innings. Erik Bedard (2-2) was dealt the loss after he was touched for two runs on six hits in seven frames on the hill.
