Final Score: Boston 6, Detroit 3

Mike Lowell finished 3-for-5 with a single, double and his first home run of the season as Boston topped Detroit, 6-3, in the opener of a four-game set at Comerica Park. Kevin Youkilis added a two- run blast while David Ortiz homered and drove in a pair for the Red Sox, winners in four straight and five of six. Daisuke Matsuzaka (5-0) remained perfect on the year by allowing two hits and one run over five innings, but walked a career-high eight batters. Jonathan Papelbon pitched a scoreless ninth for his 10th save and second in as many days. Marcus Thames had a two-run single and Curtis Granderson added an RBI hit for the Tigers, who have dropped four games in a row. Jeremy Bonderman (2-3) allowed seven hits and four runs over six frames in the loss, breaking a four-game personal win streak over the Red Sox.

Final Score: Toronto 1, Chicago 0

Dustin McGowan hurled 7 1/3 shutout innings, and Matt Stairs hit his fourth home run of the year for the game's lone run as the Toronto Blue Jays completed a four-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox with a 1-0 win at Rogers Centre. McGowan (2-2) allowed just four hits while striking out six and walking none, and B.J. Ryan worked around three walks in the ninth for his fifth save. Shannon Stewart went 3-for-4 with a triple, while Vernon Wells and Aaron Hill each doubled. With the win, the Jays pulled off the first four-game sweep by either team in the history of the series. The loss spoiled a brilliant outing for Javier Vazquez (3-3), who took the loss despite allowing one run on eight hits in 7 2/3 frames, striking out nine. Juan Uribe had two of the four hits for the White Sox, who lost their sixth straight.

Final Score: LA Angels of Anaheim 4, Kansas City 0

Ervin Santana threw a four-hit shutout, while Garret Anderson and Brandon Wood hit back-to-back home runs as part of a four-run ninth inning to lead the Angels to a 4-0 win over the Kansas City Royals in the opener of a three-game series. Santana (6-0) struck out nine and didn't issue a walk while needing only 97 pitches to notch the second shutout of his career. The first came May 23, 2005, when he blanked the White Sox in his second major league start. Santana joined teammate Joe Saunders at 6-0, making them the first set of teammates to start with that mark since Pedro Martinez and John Burkett accomplished the feat with Boston in 2002. Anderson hit a two-run homer and Wood had his first homer of the year for the Angels, winners of three straight. Casey Kotchman knocked in the eventual winning run with a single, and Erick Aybar went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored for Los Angeles. Ramon Ramirez (0-1) took the loss after allowing a run over 1 1/3 innings in relief of Brett Tomko, who struck out seven and allowed just two hits in seven innings. Jimmy Gobble allowed a run without recording an out, while Joel Peralta yielded the homers to Anderson and Wood in two-thirds of an inning.

Final Score: Oakland 2, Baltimore 1 (10 innings)

Emil Brown had three hits, including the game- winning single with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning, as the Athletics beat Baltimore, 2-1, in the opener of a three-game series. Brown was on base four times and Rajai Davis drove in the other run for Oakland, which has won two straight. Dana Eveland allowed three hits in seven- plus shutout innings for the A's, and Joey Devine (3-0) struck out two batters in the 10th to get the victory. Ramon Hernandez knocked in the lone run for Baltimore, which has dropped three in a row, tying a season-high. The Orioles had just five hits. Garrett Olson struck out seven batters over 6 1/3 innings. He also gave up four hits and a run, but Jim Johnson (0-1) suffered the loss.

Final Score: Seattle 7, Texas 3

Richie Sexson and Wladimir Balentien hit home runs, as the Seattle Mariners snapped a five-game losing streak with a 7-3 win over the Texas Rangers in the opener of a four-game set from Safeco Field. Jarrod Washburn (2-4) allowed three runs on four hits in six-plus innings for Seattle before leaving with tightness in his right calf. Balentien drove in three runs, while Raul Ibanez doubled twice and knocked in a pair of runs. Jose Lopez went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Kevin Millwood (2-3) lasted only three innings, yielding seven runs on nine hits, including a pair of home runs. Millwood has now lost 10 consecutive decisions on the road dating to last season, a Texas club record, surpassing Don Stanhouse and Jamie Moyer. The right-hander's last road victory came on June 17, 2007 at Cincinnati. Millwood's streak also ties Joe McClain of the 1961-62 Senators for the franchise record. Josh Rupe pitched four innings of one-hit ball in relief for Texas, which has dropped two straight after a season- high four-game winning streak. Milton Bradley had two RBI, while Michael Young finished 2-for-4 with a run scored.
