Final Score: Cincinnati 5, Chicago 3

Rookie Johnny Cueto put together a solid performance on the mound, as the Cincinnati Reds survived a late scare from the Chicago Cubs and held on for a 5-3 win in the opener of a three-game series at Great American Ball Park. Cueto (2-3) allowed three runs on six hits, walked two and struck out eight over six innings to pick up the win. Francisco Cordero overcame a shaky ninth inning to nail down his fifth save of the season. Adam Dunn hit a two-run homer, while Jeff Keppinger drove in two runs for the Reds, who snapped a five-game losing streak. Cincinnati mustered only six hits. Ryan Dempster (4-1) gave up five unearned runs on four hits and fanned seven in six innings to absorb the loss for Chicago, which has dropped eight of its last 11 outings. Geovany Soto finished 3-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and an RBI, while Ryan Theriot was 2-for-4 with a double and a run batted in.

Final Score: St. Louis 6, Colorado 5

Albert Pujols' double and heads-up base running in the ninth inning proved to be the difference in the Cardinals' 6-5 victory over the Colorado Rockies in a back-and-forth opener of a four-game set at Coors Field. With one out in the ninth, Pujols doubled down the right field line off reliever Brian Fuentes. Rick Ankiel followed with a groundout to second base, but the heady Pujols, who was running before the pitch, made the turn around third, and avoided Yorvit Torrealba's tag at the plate for the deciding run. Jason Isringhausen closed it out in the bottom half for his 11th save, and Randy Flores (1-0) was credited with the win despite giving up the tying run in the eighth in his lone inning on the hill for St. Louis. Yadier Molina recorded three hits and a run scored, while Adam Kennedy tripled and drove in a run for the victors. Cardinals starter Joel Pineiro was hit hard for eight hits and four runs -- three earned -- but did manage a two-run double. Counterpart Ubaldo Jimenez struggled in his five-inning start for Colorado, surrendering four runs -- three earned -- on seven hits, while fanning four and walking three. Fuentes (0-2) was saddled with the loss for his ninth- inning performance. Brad Hawpe homered, scored twice and drove in a pair, and Chris Iannetta tallied three hits for the Rockies, who have won just twice in their last 10 games.

Final Score: Philadelphia 11, Arizona 4

Jamie Moyer was dazzling on the mound and the Philadelphia Phillies pounded out 17 hits en route to a convincing 11-4 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the opener of a four-game set from Chase Field. Moyer (2-2), who is the oldest player in the majors at 45, allowed two runs on six hits and struck out five over a season-best seven innings to earn the win. The wily veteran helped his own cause, going 2-for-3 with a run batted in. Geoff Jenkins and Carlos Ruiz each finished with three hits and an RBI, while Eric Bruntlett tripled and knocked in three runs for Philadelphia, which was coming off a 4-2 homestand. Chase Utley doubled twice and scored two runs. Ryan Howard also drove in a pair. Max Scherzer (0-1), making his first major-league start, surrendered five runs -- two earned -- on seven hits and struck out five in four innings. Chris Snyder homered and scored twice, while Stephen Drew added an RBI triple for the Diamondbacks, losers of two straight. Justin Upton and Chris Young both added a pair of hits.

Final Score: Los Angeles 5, New York 1

Matt Kemp continued his recent tear with a two-run homer, while Chad Billingsley and the Dodgers' bullpen stifled the New York Mets in a 5-1 decision to open a three-game series at Dodger Stadium. Billingsley (2-4) struggled with his control but recorded outs when he needed, surrendering a lone run on five hits and four walks, while fanning four in six-plus innings. Blake DeWitt and Rafael Furcal each hit solo home runs for the Dodgers, who got back in the win column after snapping an eight- game winning streak on Sunday. Carlos Beltran tripled and scored during a 2-for-4 effort at the plate, but the Mets recorded just five hits in the loss. Oliver Perez (2-3), who didn't get out of the second inning in his latest start, gave New York six frames, but allowed five runs on six hits and two free passes.
