Jesse Litsch was dominant on the mound and Vernon Wells drove in three runs, as the Toronto Blue Jays downed the Chicago White Sox, 5-2, in the second of a four-game set from Rogers Centre. Litsch (4-1) allowed two runs on five hits and struck out three over 7 1/3 innings for the Blue Jays, winners of three straight. Solo home runs from Jermaine Dye and Carlos Quentin provided the offense for the White Sox, who pounded out only six hits a day after Toronto's pitching staff limited them to two in a 2-0 loss. Paul Konerko was 2-for-4 in defeat.
Final Score: LA Angels of Anaheim 3, Baltimore 1
Jon Garland cruised through eight innings allowing only three hits and one earned run in helping the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim to a 3-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles at Angel Stadium. Garland (4-3) gave up two singles and a run in the top of the second then settled down, allowing only a one-out Melvin Mora double in the seventh through six scoreless innings the rest of the way. He finished the game with one walk and one strikeout. Gary Matthews Jr. knocked in two runs with two sacrifices and Reggie Willits had two hits while knocking in one for the Angels, who snapped a two-game losing streak. Chone Figgins did the dirty work on the basepaths, scoring the winning and insurance runs, drawing two walks and stealing a base. Daniel Cabrera (2-1) was mildly effective through 7 1/3 innings, giving up three earned runs on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Cabrera's past control problems came back to bite him in the later innings with a hit batter, walk and a wild pitch that set up all three runs to score. Luke Scott knocked in the only run for Baltimore, which has lost three of their last four.
Final Score: Kansas City 4, Cleveland 2
Former No. 1 overall draft pick Luke Hochevar stifled the Indians for six innings, and Kansas City used a four-run seventh to overtake Cleveland, 4-2 at Progressive Field. Weather has played a factor in this scheduled three-game series with Friday's opener being postponed due to rain and Saturday's showdown delayed 1:16. Fresh off his first major league win, Hochevar (2-1) allowed two runs on just three hits and four walks, while fanning six for Kansas City, which had dropped three of four. Joakim Soria recorded a 1-2-3 ninth for his seventh save of the season in a terrific outing for the Royals' bullpen. David DeJesus was 2-for-5 with a steal, a run scored and one batted in, while Mark Teahen roped three hits, and Billy Butler recorded the go-ahead RBI for the victors. C.C. Sabathia (1-5), whose only victory this season came against the Royals on April 22, dropped another decision after being touched for four runs on 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings for the Indians, who had won seven of their last 10. Grady Sizemore launched a solo home run, and David Dellucci recorded two of the Tribe's four hits.
Final Score: Minnesota 4, Detroit 1
Craig Monroe connected on a two-run homer and the Minnesota bullpen tossed six strong innings, helping the Twins take the second of a three-game set against the Detroit Tigers, 4-1, at the Metrodome. Brian Bass (1-0) filled in nicely for injured Twins starter Scott Baker who left after three innings with a groin strain. Baker had to leave his second consecutive start after aggravating the injury, suffered during his last start April 26 at Texas. Bass scattered three hits over four innings, equaling his longest outing of the season and by far his most effective. Mike Lamb had two hits and scored the first two runs of the game for the Twins, who are riding a four-game win streak. Michael Cuddyer had two runs batted in, while Joe Mauer added three hits. Joe Nathan notched his 10th save. Justin Verlander (1-5) went seven innings giving up four earned runs on seven hits for Detroit. He struck out five and walked two in the losing effort. Manny Ramirez ended with two RBI, one hit and two walks for the Red Sox, who have won two in a row and four of five. Josh Beckett (3-2) was solid in eight innings of work, allowing four runs on seven hits and one walk, while fanning five. Gabe Gross and Akinori Iwamura each homered for Tampa Bay, which has lost two in a row, while Dioner Navarro added two hits. Rays starter James Shields (3-2) was roughed up in 3 2/3 innings, as he surrendered seven runs on 10 hits.
Final Score: Texas 6, Oakland 3
A.J. Murray was efficient in a rare start, and David Murphy's three-run homer in the first inning jump-started a 6-3 Texas Rangers' victory over the Oakland Athletics in the second of three meetings at McAfee Coliseum. Making his first start of the season, Murray (1-0) scattered three runs -- two earned -- on six hits and two walks in 5 1/3 innings for the Rangers, who have won a season-high four straight. Joaquin Benoit anchored a scoreless bullpen effort en route to his first save of the season. Each Ranger in the starting lineup had exactly one hit with Chris Shelton making his count with a solo home run. Michael Young and Josh Hamilton each plated a run for Texas. Chad Gaudin (3-2), who had won three straight starts, was given the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits and two walks in six innings for the A's.
