Edwin Encarnacion went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in and also saved at least one run with his glove, as the Cincinnati Reds took the opener of a three-game set with the St. Louis Cardinals, 4-3, at Busch Stadium. Ken Griffey, Jr., Brandon Phillips and Adam Dunn had two hits apiece, with Phillips and Dunn each knocking a run for the Reds, who won their third in a row. Bronson Arroyo (1-3) allowed three runs on six hits while fanning six to earn his first win of 2008, and Francisco Cordero picked up his fourth save. Todd Wellemeyer (2-1) yielded four runs on seven hits over his six innings to take the loss, while Rick Ankiel, Albert Pujols and Chris Duncan each had a pair of hits for St. Louis. Ankiel's home run accounted for one Cardinals tally, while Troy Glaus and Cesar Izturis had the other St. Louis RBI.

Dan Haren bounced back from his first loss as a Diamondback, pitching 7 2/3 solid frames in Arizona's 5-3 victory over Houston in the opener of a three-game set. Haren (4-1) gave up three runs on five hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Mark Reynolds knocked in a pair of runs for the Diamondbacks, who began their 10-game homestand with their third win in four tries. Brandon Lyon pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his eighth save of the campaign. Chris Sampson (1-3) was handed the loss after not making it out of the fifth frame. The right-hander gave up five runs on seven hits with a pair of walks in 4 1/3 innings. Miguel Tejada, Hunter Pence and Mark Loretta drove in runs for Houston, which has lost three in a row after a six-game winning streak.

Aaron Rowand drove in two runs and Matt Cain threw into the sixth inning to snap a personal 10-game winless stretch, as the Giants blanked the Colorado Rockies, 4-0, in the opener of a three- game series. Cain (1-2), who posted his first win since last August 28, when he beat the Rockies, allowed four hits, walked five and struck out three in 5 1/3 innings. The right-hander moved to a 6-3 lifetime against Colorado. Ray Durham had two hits with an RBI and scored twice, while Rich Aurilia drove in the other run, as San Francisco snapped a two-game skid, but won for the fourth time in six games. Franklin Morales (1-2) was charged with six hits and four runs over 4 1/3 innings in the loss. He also walked five and had one strikeout. Garrett Atkins and Yorvit Torrealba each had two hits for the defending National League champions, losers in eight of their last nine games.

Pittsburgh at New York, postponed

Monday's contest between the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Mets at Shea Stadium was postponed due to rain, and will be rescheduled for August 11 at 1:10 p.m. (et). Pittsburgh's Ian Snell and New York's Johan Santana, the scheduled starters for the contest, are expected to take the hill when the series begins on Tuesday.
