Final Score: Pittsburgh 7, St. Louis 4

Jose Bautista singled home the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning, as the Pittsburgh Pirates survived a four- run Cardinals first to come away with a 7-4 victory in the opener of a two- game set at PNC Park against St. Louis. The Pirates allowed four runs in the first frame, but battled back to tie the game in the fifth. Both bullpens maintained the stalemate until the eighth, when Ryan Doumit started a rally with a leadoff single off Cardinals' reliever Anthony Reyes. Doumit moved to second on a ground out and scored two batters later on Bautista's inside-out swing to right. Doug Mientkiewicz added two more insurance runs on a two-out single, and Matt Capps closed the door with a perfect ninth inning. Jason Bay hit a two-run home run and Freddy Sanchez added two hits and two runs scored, as Pittsburgh has won back-to-back games after losing six in a row. Pirates' starter Ian Snell settled down after a rough start, allowing four runs -- all in the first -- on eight hits and four walks in six innings. Damaso Marte (1-0) got the win after throwing two scoreless innings in relief, and Capps notched his sixth save of the season. Troy Glaus and Adam Kennedy each had two-run singles in the first inning for St. Louis, which has lost four of its last five. Starter Todd Wellemeyer was allowed four runs on seven hits in six innings, striking out five in a no- decision. Reyes (1-1) took the loss.

Final Score: New York 7, Washington 2

Johan Santana threw seven strong innings as the New York Mets topped Washington, 7-2, in the opener of a two-game series. The two-time American League Cy Young Award winner allowed seven hits and two runs, while walking one and fanning four batters. Santana (3-2) also doubled twice for the Mets, who snapped a three-game overall skid, but improved to 4-0 this season versus the Nationals. Billy Wagner threw a perfect ninth, and the powerful left-hander has yet to allow a hit in his eight innings thus far this season. Ryan Church drove in two runs against his former team and Carlos Beltran had a pair of hits and scored twice in the victory, the Mets' first visit to new Nationals Park. Tim Redding (3-2) was charged with four hits and three runs over five-plus innings for the Nationals, who have dropped seven of their last nine contests. Redding knocked in the only two runs for Washington with a double in the fourth inning.

Final Score: Houston 9, Cincinnati 3

Hunter Pence went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs batted in and two scored to lead the Houston Astros to a 9-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds. Carlos Lee had two doubles with an RBI, while Darin Erstad went 3-for-5. Mark Loretta went 2-for-4 with a double for Houston, which extended its season-long winning streak to four. Every starting Astros position player had at least one hit. Chris Sampson (1-2) surrendered two runs on eight hits in seven solid innings, with six strikeouts to one walk for Houston. Ken Griffey Jr. slammed his 597th career home run, while Brandon Phillips finished with two doubles for the Reds, who have lost two of three. Catcher David Ross, who earlier Wednesday was activated from the disabled list, had two hits. Bronson Arroyo (0-3) was touched for eight runs on 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings, though he walked just one and struck out five. He remained winless this season as his earned run averaged ballooned to 7.56.

Andrew Miller (1-2) gave up two runs -- one earned -- on nine hits in five innings of work. Doug Waechter, Matt Lindstrom, Taylor Tankersley and Justin Miller each threw a scoreless inning of relief. Matt Diaz went 2-for-4 with a solo homer, while Kelly Johnson, Mark Teixeira and Brian McCann each added two hits apiece for Atlanta, which has lost two in a row after winning five straight. Jeff Bennett (0-1) gave up three runs on five hits in six innings, while Blaine Boyer and Chris Resop each allowed two runs apiece in relief.

Final Score: Milwaukee 5, Philadelphia 4

Prince Fielder belted a pair of two-run home runs, including the go-ahead blast off Cole Hamels in the eighth inning, as the Milwaukee Brewers rallied for a 5-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in the opener of a two-game series at Miller Park. Fielder's two-homer game was the ninth of his career for the Brewers, winners of five of their last seven. Gabe Kapler knocked in the other Brewers run, while Rickie Weeks and Ryan Braun each doubled and scored. Mitch Stetter (1-0) earned the win after two innings of scoreless relief, while Derrick Turnbow earned his first save of the year. Greg Dobbs added a two- run homer, while Pat Burrell added a solo blast, his eighth of the year. Hamels (2-3) sandwiched six brilliant innings between two disastrous ones, allowing three runs in the first and two in the eighth as he surrendered five runs on eight hits in seven-plus frames while striking out a season-high 11.

Final Score: Chicago 7, Colorado 6 (10 innings)

Ryan Theriot singled home the game-winning run in the 10th inning as the Chicago Cubs upended the Colorado Rockies, 7-6, for the club's 10,000th win in franchise history. While the game took place at Colorado's Coors Field, many die-hard Cubs' fans made their presence known in the dramatic history-making win. Chicago is just the second franchise to win 10,000 games, the other being the San Francisco Giants. After both closers blew their team's respective leads in the ninth inning, Theriot drilled a two- out Kip Wells pitch to right field, and pinch-runner Mike Fontenot easily scored the game-winning run for Chicago. Carlos Marmol, facing the heart of the Rockies' lineup, set down the opposition in succession to record his second save of the season. Geovany Soto, whose single started the rally in the 10th, went 4-for-5 with a solo home run, helping Chicago win its sixth straight game. Aramis Ramirez hit a two-run homer and finished with three RBI, while Derrek Lee tripled during a 4-for-5 effort at the plate. Kerry Wood (2-0) blew his second save of the season, but got the win after pitching a one-run ninth. Cubs starter Rich Hill allowed three hits and four walks, while striking out three and allowing two runs in five-plus innings of work. Troy Tulowitzki drilled a three-run homer and Clint Barmes hit a solo shot for the Rockies, who have lost four consecutive games. Starter Franklin Morales surrendered eighth hits and three runs through six frames, and Manny Corpas blew his fourth save of the season. Wells (1-1) was saddled with the loss.

Final Score: San Francisco 3, San Diego 2 (13 innings)

Fred Lewis and Aaron Rowand singled in runs in the 13th inning, and the Giants escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the bottom half of the frame to hold on for a 3-2 win over the San Diego Padres. Greg Maddux was in line for his landmark 350th career victory, but Bengie Molina homered in the ninth inning off Trevor Hoffman to spoil the milestone. Keiichi Yabu (2-1) got the win by throwing two-thirds of an inning, and Glendon Rusch (0-2) suffered the loss. Rowand had three hits for the Giants, who snapped a two-game skid. It was the second straight home game the Padres went deep into extra innings. They lost a 22-inning marathon to the Rockies last Thursday, and all told those two games combined have lasted over 10 hours. The Padres have dropped three in a row and seven of their last eight games.

Final Score: Los Angeles 8, Arizona 3

James Loney and Chin-lung Hu each drove in two runs in Los Angeles' 8-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the opener of a two-game series.
