Gabe Kapler singled home the game-winning run in the 12th inning as the Milwaukee Brewers came away with a 9-8 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals to split their two-game series at Miller Park. Gabe Gross, who scored three times, earned a one-out walk in the 12th and, after several pickoff attempts, stole second to put himself in scoring position. Kapler then drilled a Jason Isringhausen curveball into center field and Gross eased home for the win. The Brewers blew a five-run lead in the game, but managed to snap their two-game losing streak. Brewers starter Manny Parra only lasted five innings, giving up three runs on nine hits and two walks. Seth McClung (1-0) picked up the win after throwing a perfect 12th. Albert Pujols finished 2-for-6 at the plate with a run scored and two batted in for the Cardinals, who have lost three of their last four. Aaron Miles recorded four hits, while Skip Schumaker and Troy Glaus notched three hits apiece. Kyle Lohse, who came into the game with a 1.48 ERA, had his first rough outing of the season for St. Louis, allowing four runs on eight hits and two walks in just four innings on the hill. Kosuke Fukudome was 3-for-3 with two runs scored, while Reed Johnson added a two-run single in the game. Lilly (1-3) allowed just one run on four hits to pick up his first win of the season for Chicago. Brady Clark was 1-for-3 and had the only RBI for the Mets, who have dropped three straight after winning the previous five. Lastings Milledge went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored, as Washington spoiled John Smoltz's milestone night with a 6-0 win over Atlanta. Willie Harris finished 2-for-3 with a double and run batted in, and Ryan Zimmerman had a two-RBI double for the Nationals, who snapped a three-game losing streak. John Lannan (1-2) scattered five hits in seven shutout innings, while walking three and striking out four. Ray King, Luis Ayala and Jon Rauch combined to shut the Braves out the rest of the way. Smoltz (3-1) became the 16th pitcher in major league history with 3,000 career strikeouts in a solid start. He needed four coming into the contest and got 10 in seven innings, putting him at 3006 total. He also gave up the lone run over the first eight innings of play, along with five hits.

Ryan Doumit finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI for Pittsburgh, while Nate McLouth went 0-for-2 with two walks, snapping his hitting streak at 20 games. Jerry Hairston, Jr. led the Cincinnati offense, batting 4-for-5 with a double, a stolen base and three runs knocked in. Adam Dunn and Brandon Phillips each launched solo home runs, and Paul Bako scored and brought a runner home. Joey Votto went 3-for-4 with an RBI double and a pair of runs scored for the Reds, who have triumphed in two of their last three outings after dropping seven of eight. Rafael Furcal knocked in Los Angeles' lone run, which was scored by starting pitcher Hong-Chih Kuo (0-1), who did not last long on the rubber. Kuo tossed 3 2/3 innings before being chased, giving up five runs on eight hits to absorb the loss for the Dodgers, who had bested the Reds in 11 of 13 meetings and six of eight in Cincinnati before Tuesday's defeat.

Doug Brocail gave up four runs in one-third of an inning, while Jose Valverde (3-1) tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings to earn the win. Lance Berkman went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and two RBI for Houston, which has reeled off three straight wins. Kazuo Matsui was 2- for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Darin Erstad added two hits and a run batted in. Geoff Blum and Hunter Pence each homered in the win. Jake Peavy yielded four runs on seven hits in six innings for San Diego, which has dropped six of its last seven contests. Matt Holliday and Garrett Atkins each homered and drove in a pair of runs for Colorado, which has dropped three straight outings on the heels of a four-game win streak. Willy Taveras and Jeff Baker chipped in with one RBI apiece. Manny Corpas (0-1) took both the blown save and the loss for the Rockies, while Jeff Francis escaped with a no-decision after giving up four runs on six hits and four walks in seven innings.
