Default Pena Activated from DL

Nats reinstate outfielder Pena from DL

The Washington Nationals today optioned catcher Jesus Flores to Columbus of the Triple-A International League and recalled from rehab and reinstated outfielder Wily Mo Pena from the 15-day disabled list. Nationals senior vice president and general manager Jim Bowden made the announcement.

The 25-year-old Pena played in one game with Columbus of the Triple-A International League. Pena went 0-for-2 on Saturday at Charlotte, and played in numerous extended Spring Training contests since being placed on the 15-day DL on March 20 with a left-oblique strain. Last season, the Nationals averaged 5.0 runs per game after Pena was acquired from Boston on August 17. Prior to the trade, Washington averaged 3.88 runs per contest.

Flores, 23, went 4-for-11 (.364) with two doubles, one home run and three RBIs in four games for Washington this season. Flores, Washington's first selection in the 2006 Rule 5 Draft, spent the entire 2007 season with the Nationals and batted .244 (44-for-180) with nine doubles, four home runs and 25 RBIs in 79 games.

Pena's power should definitely be a boon for the Nationals struggling offense; I wouldn't call him a significant difference maker, but he is certainly a strong addition to the line-up.
