Andruw Jones Sees Stock Drops
Quote:
MLB: Big acquisition bats No. 7 in lineup against Padres.
Certainly the Dodgers have not been following the motto of the stock market when it comes to new center fielder Andruw Jones. The idea in investing is to buy low and sell high. With Jones it has been the other way around as the Dodgers bought high this offseason to the tune of two years and $36.2million. The low came Friday night when Jones was dropped in the batting order.
For the first time this season, Jones found himself batting seventh after previously batting fourth (once), fifth (three times) and sixth (four times). His .129 batting average was one of the main reasons, although his lack of a home run and just one RBI heading into Friday's game certainly didn't deserve a spot any higher in the order.
"I'm batting Andruw seventh just to get him out of that responsibility spot," manager Joe Torre said. "Although I have found that when I have done that in the past, the player usually finds a way to hit with the bases loaded anyway."
It's still early, so bringing some levity to the situation isn't a problem. But if that .129 finds a way to hang around until June or July, it might be a little harder to draw laughs.
So Jones searches for answers. He went into Friday's game with nine strikeouts compared to two walks, and had grounded into two double plays. In his first at-bat Friday, Jones struck out against the Padres' Jake Peavy.
"You want to come out and show why you're (here)," Jones said. "I've played the game for a while. You just want to get off to a good start especially with a good team.
"I just have to calm down and hopefully get a good (rhythm) going."
