The Mets could not have asked for a better first outing from Nelson Figueroa. The fill-in for Pedro Martinez retired the first 14 batters en route to a solid six innings, and the Mets answered a Brewers rally in kind. Shortstop Jose Reyes left the game after five innings with a tight left hamstring.

Manny Parra cruised for three innings, but New York got to him for three runs in the fourth. The Brewers got two of them back, but the Mets tacked on an insurance run in the seventh to put away the opener of a three-game set. J.J. Hardy and Prince Fielder had RBI doubles.
